Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an alleged serial killer who had been absconding for years under the guise of a minstrel (baul singer) from Bhairab in Kishoreganj on Wednesday.

The arrestee was identified as Selim Fakir, alias Baul Selim, alias Helal Hossain, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case.

RAB Legal and Media Wing Director Commander Khandaker Al Moin said the convict was identified through a viral music video of ‘Bhanga Tori Chera Pal’ by singer Polash.

Helal used to live in different shrines or railway stations. As far as we know, Selim was involved in at least three murders. He has been absconding under the guise of minstrel (baul singer) for many years, the officer said. Selim Fakir stayed at various shrines and railway stations for about 20 years to evade arrest.

RAB came to know about his hideout about six months ago. A person informed them that the model of a video song posted on YouTube had been accused in a murder case in Bogura in 2001.

Helal featured in the song released in 2016 as a Baul artist. The video reportedly gained nearly 45 million views on YouTube and went viral on social media.

The video even earned praises from viewers and Helal was lauded for his performance but nobody could guess that he was a serial killer.

A Bogura court had sentenced him to life imprisonment for murdering Mahmudul Hasan Bidyut of Bagura in 2001. Mahmudul was hacked to death.

Helal was also named as one of the key accused in at least two other murder cases. He was finally arrested in 2015 in a theft case filed with Bogura Sadar Police Station in 2010.

He went out on bail in 2015, the same year when the verdict of Bidyut murder case was delivered. Helal, however, managed to dodge law enforcers.

Helal was also accused in Bishnu murder case in Bogura in 1997. Following the killing, he reportedly became infamous in the area for his brutality.

In 2006, Helal was also named in charge-sheet as one of the prime accused in Rabiul murder case.
