Arranging a press conference by Narayanganj MP Shamim Osman on the upcoming Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) election is a violation of the electoral code of conduct, but it is not a punishable offence, said Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda on Wednesday.

The CEC made the comments while exchanging views with presiding and returning officers in Narayanganj ahead of the NCC polls slated for January 16. He said that law enforcers have been instructed to be on alert for untoward incidents in the city corporation area prior to the elections.

“Candidates didn’t engage in any conflicts and clashes except making some allegations. No clashes will take place in the election,” he said.

When his attention was drawn to the surge in coronavirus infection, he said there is no scope to stop election campaign right now.

Voters as well as those who will engage in conducing the election must wear masks in all polling stations on the day of voting, he said.

On Monday, Shamim Osman held a news conference and announced his support for Awami League’s mayoral aspirant Selina Hayat Ivy.
