The ruling Awami League (AL) has been invited to participate in the president’s dialogue, which is scheduled to be held on January 17, on reconstitution of the Election Commission (EC).

The meeting will begin at 4:00pm on the day, said the Bangabhaban Press Wing.

President Abdul Hamid has initiated the talk with the registered political parties to ask for their opinion about reformation of the EC as the tenure of the incumbent EC will end on February 14.

Some 32 political parties have so far been invited for the talk that began on December 20 last year.

On the first day of the dialogue, main opposition Jatiya Party placed a three-point proposal, which includes making a separate law, before the President for reconstitution of the EC.

Like the two previous occasions, the President may form a search committee, comprising noted citizens, to constitute the new EC, which will oversee the next general polls slated for 2023.

The members of the search committee would propose names for the Chief Election Commissioner and the four other commissioners.

Major opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which attended the previous two talks, has decided not to join the dialogue this time.

Some other minor parties have also followed the path of the BNP.
