Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and International Labor Organisation (ILO) are going to ensure the occupational health and safety of workers in 50 knitwear factories through launching a project.

The project will provide important training and technical assistance to the safety committees formed for this purpose, including on issues related to clothing, health and safety, risk and accident reduction, and what to do in the context of Corona epidemic.

BKMEA and ILO have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for ensuring workers’ safety at the BKMEA Dhaka office on Sunday.

BKMEA Senior Vice President Mansoor Ahmed, BKMEA Vice President Fazlee Shamim Ehsan, ILO Country Director Tuomo Poutiainen, and ILO safety expert Maurice L Brooks signed the MoU.

BKMEA Director Mostofa Monwar Bhuiyan, others high officials of both the organisations were also present on the occasion.

BKMEA Senior Vice President Mansoor Ahmed said that the project will play a vital role in enhancing the productivity of the knitwear factory and the occupational health and safety of the workers.

He hoped that the successful implementation of the project will be conducive to national development and production.

Referring to the project as a milestone, ILO Country Director Tuomo Poutiainen said that the project has made occupational health and safety important in Bangladesh.

Since production has a direct relationship with workers, their occupational health and safety should be taken seriously, Tuomo Poutiainen added.
