Another victim of Abhijan launch fire succumbed to burns on Monday, taking the death toll in the deadly disaster on the Sugandha River in Jhalokati to 49.
Mohammad Rasel, 38, who received burns to 40 percent of his body and was put on life support, died in Sheikh Hasina Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute on Monday, said resident doctor SM Ayub Hossain.
On the other hand, 12 victims including Jesmin Akhter, who lost her eight-year-old son and five-year-old daughter in the blaze, are still receiving treatment in the institute.
On December 24, Abhijan-10 went up in flames near Jhalokati’s Gabkhan.
The blaze broke out at about 3:00 am on the Barguna-bound vessel carrying around 1,000 passengers which is much higher than its actual capacity.
More than 100 others suffered burns or injuries. It is the deadliest inland vessel fire in Bangladesh’s history.
Three cases have been filed over the incident. Launch owner Hamjalal Sheikh, launch master in-charge Reaz Sikdar, second master Khalilur Rahman and drivers Masum Billah and Abul Kalam have landed in jail.
