CHATTOGRAM: State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud said the Chattogram port is the driving force and gateway of Bangladesh’s economy.
Different ongoing development projects including Patenga Container Terminal (PTC) and Bay Terminal and Matarbari Deep Seaport are ushering hopesin the days to come, he said.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took the initiative for enacting law regarding the maritime sector while the country is now advancing fast under the dynamic leadership of his daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said the state minister.
“All people including workers of the port are owners of it (port) while the officials and employees concerned are committed to take it further forward,” he said.
Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) chairman Rear Admiral M Shahjahan said the vessels are now enjoying zero turnaround time at the port and it has been saving the foreign currencies. “We broke the record of 135 years through handling 32.14 lakh containers last year. The capacity for storing containers has also been increased,” he said.
Rear Admiral M Shahjahan said they kept the port’s operations functional round-the-clock during the bad situations of the coronavirus pandemic.
He said the necessary steps were taken to keep the activities of off-dock, shipping agents, main line operators, feeder service and container transportation by road smoothly. The under-construction PTC can be inaugurated within two to three months while the large vessels will be able to take berth after development of the Bay Terminal, said Rear Admiral Shahjahan.
The state minister also inaugurated an overflow yard and swimming complex of the port on the day.
