Two more bodies were recovered from Sungandha and Bishkhali rivers in Jhalakathi on Wednesday, reaching the highest ever number of deaths from the launch fire incidents in the history of Bangladesh.

The death toll from the fire breaking out in a three-decker launch in the Sungandha river in Jhalakathi recently rose to 46.

However, none of the bodies could be identified immediately.

Shahidul Islam, station officer of Jhalakathi Fire Station, said after receiving information that the body of a woman, 35, was floating in the Sugandha river, firefighters rushed to the spot and recovered it around 8:30am.

The women wearing a pink salwar-kameez seems to have been one of the passengers of the launch, he said.

After the recovery of the woman’s body, the firefighters spotted the body of a youth, 30, from the Biskhali river.

The youth dressed in a pant and a T-shirt, he said, adding they found a photo in his wallet, but could not confirm that if the photo was of the deceased or not.

The bodies were handed over to Jhalakathi Sadar Police Station.
