A three-day ‘Zainul Utsab’ began at Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University (DU) on Wednesday marking the 107th birth anniversary of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin, the pioneer of modern art in Bangladesh.

DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the festival in the morning.

Dean of Faculty of Fine Arts Prof Nisar Hossain presided over the inaugural ceremony while Secretary of Ministry of Cultural Affairs Abul Monsur was present as the chief guest and DU Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof Muhammad Samad, Director of Bangladesh Folk Crafts Foundation Ahmed Ullah and Zainul's son Khairul Abedin were present as the special guests.

In his speech, DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman said that the impeccable contribution of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin in bringing our arts and cultural sphere to the pinnacle of modernization and prosperity will always be remembered.

He urged the teachers and students of the Faculty of Fine Arts to follow the ideals and art concept of Shilpacharya.

At the programme noted artist Abdus Shakoor Shah and professor of Visva-Bharati University of India Romon Shib Kumar honoured with ‘Zainul Sanmanana 2021’ to contribute in art and culture. 

Besides, a three-day ‘Zainul Mela’ was also inaugurated at the Fine Arts premises on the occasion of the festival.
