The country lost a good many notable cultural personalities in 2021. The celebrities we have lost  in the year include actors A.T.M. Shamsuzzaman, Kabori, Wasim, Enamul Haque, and Mahmud Sajjad. Singers Fakir Alamgir, Mita Haque, literature Rabeya Khatun, musician Farid Ahmed also passed away this year.

Here we’re paying our respects to all the stars who have passed away in 2021.  

Ekushey Padak and Independence Day Award-winning novelist Rabeya Khatun died on January 3 at the age of 86. She wrote over 50 novels and more than 400 short stories. The writer was also awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award. 

Popular film actress Sarah Begum Kabori died on April 17 due to coronavirus. She was 70. Kabori started acting professionally at the age of thirteen through Subhash Dutta’s film ‘Sutorang’. She acted in numerous films notably ‘Sujon Sokhi’, ‘Sareng Bou’, ‘Devdas’, ‘Titash Ekti Nadir Naam’ and others. Kabori got involved into politics later in her life. She became an elected member of parliament from the Narayanganj-4 constituency as an Awami League politician in 2008 and served until 2014.

Noted actor A T M Shamsuzzaman passed away on February 20. The Ekushey Padak and National Film Award-winning actor’s notable films are ‘Surja Dighal Bari’, ‘Dayee Ke?’, ‘Madam Fuli’, ‘Chorabali’ and others.

Prominent Tagore singer Mita Haque passed away on April 11 at the age of 58. Besides her esteemed singing career, Mita Haque was the founder director and teacher of her music school Shurotirtha. She was conferred with Ekushey Padak in 2020.

 Freedom fighter and actor Mujibur Rahman Dilu passed away on January 19. Dilu, was popular for his performance as Malu in the drama serial ‘Songsoptok’. 

Renowned actor Wasim passed away on April 18. His acting debut came through the film ‘Rater Por Din’ in 1973. He reigned as one of the top heroes in Dhallywood from 1983 to 1990, mostly for his role in folk fantasy and action films. He acted in about 152 films in his acting career before unofficially retiring from the industry in 2010.

Eminent folk singer and Ekushey Padak awardee Fakir Alamgir died on July 23 due to coronavirus. He stepped into the music arena in 1966 and played a vital role during the mass upsurge of 1969 as a member of the ‘Kranti Shilpi Gosthi’ and ‘Gana Shilpi Gosthi’. During the 1971 Liberation War, he joined the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra and performed frequently to inspire freedom fighters.

Eminent playwright, academician and Ekushey Padak-winning artiste Dr Enamul Haque passed away at the age of 78 on October 11. He debuted in acting with the tele-drama ‘Mukhora Romoni Boshikoron’ in 1968. He was also a founding member of legendary theatre troupe, ‘Nagorik Natya Sampradaya’. 

Noted cultural personality and celebrated actor Mahmud Sajjad passed away on October 24. Mahmud Sajjad acted on stage as well as in TV dramas and films. 

We have also lost singer Jane Alam, film actor Shahin Alam, musician Farid Ahmed, director Sajedul Awwal, actor SM Mohsin, cine journalist Shafiuzzaman Khan Lodi, lyricist Fazal-e-Khuda, ustad Sanjib Dey , director-actor Kayes Chowdhury and actor Shamim Visti.
