Former General Secretary (GS) of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Golam Rabbani was attacked with knife in front of a polling centre at Rajoir upazila in Madaripur on Sunday.

The incident took place at Gangkandi Government School center in Ishibpur union during the voting in the 4th phase of Union Parishad (UP) elections, said Sheikh Sadik, officer-in-charge of Rajoir Police Station.

Local people said Rabbani has been campaigning for independent chairman candidate Salah Uddin, who is his maternal uncle, for the last few days.

Receiving information that vote rigging was taking place at the centre, he rushed to the centre and locked into an altercation with Sohel Molla, son of rival candidate Mosharaf Molla, over the allegations of vote rigging.

At one stage, Sohel and others attacked him and one of them stabbed him in a hand with a knife. Rabbani sustained injuries in his fingers, they said. Later, he was admitted to Rajoir Upazila Health Complex.
