The Christian community will celebrate Christmas in the country today as elsewhere across the world, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ.
They will celebrate the day by offering special prayers, illuminating churches and installing makeshift Christmas trees at homes and places of worship and missions. Elderly people of the community, attired in the outfit of Santa Claus, will make fun with kids and distribute gifts among them as part of a universal Christian practice.
Churches across the country, including Ramna St. Mary's Cathedral in Kakrail, Holy Rosary Church in Tejgaon and St. Christina Church in Mohammadpur in the capital, have taken all preparations to celebrate the day.
The inside and outside of the churches have been decorated with colourful balloons, designed cock sheets, coloured papers, lace and flowers.
Artificial Christmas trees have been decorated with colourful lamps on the church premises.
The day is a public holiday.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in separate messages greeted members of the Christian community on the occasion.
The government urged the Christians to celebrate Christmas on a very limited scale due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Besides, it took special security measures in the capital for smooth celebrations of Christmas.
The national dailies will publish special articles highlighting the importance of Christmas.
Bangladesh Betar and private radio stations and Bangladesh Television and private TV channels will air special programmes marking the day.
