Bangladesh Bank’s former governor Dr Atiur Rahman on Wednesday called upon the government to establish the rights of Char farmers to their land by formalising the property ownership.

If the government makes a move in this regard, inclusive development will be ensured, he said.

The former Bangladesh Bank governor made the call while addressing a meeting titled ‘Land for Char People: Reforms and Prospects’ organised jointly by Shamunnay and National Char Alliance at Bisshwa Sahitya Kendra in the capital.

Planning Minister MA Mannan was present at the event as the chief guest while members of parliament Ahmed Firoz Kabir, advocate Umme Kulsum Smriti, Lutfunnesa Khan and Khodeja Nasrin Akhter Hossain as the special guests.

The eminent economist also mentioned the ownership rights of Char farmers will further improve the life and livelihood of the people of Char.

Dr Atiur said the market economy has presently created a new reality. In this case, the reality of ‘operational’ rights of Char land must be accepted.

“Rather, we should develop a roadmap based on our own experience instead of a theoretical solution to the question of land rights for the people of Char,” he said.

Manusher Jonno Foundation senior programme coordinator Shoaib Sazzad Khan made the address of welcome while National Char Alliance member secretary Zahid Rahman conducted the session.
