Walton Central Zone found themselves in a favourite position to clinch a victory over Islami Bank East Zone during their second round Bangladesh Cricket League match that would also ensure their berth in the final of the four-team first-class competition.

Central Zone will need another 112 runs to complete their successive victory in the ongoing meet as they finished the third day’s play at 87-1 in Mirpur after East Zone set them a target of 199 runs.

Mohammad Mithun and Soumya Sarkar finished the day unbeaten on 42 and 33 runs respectively for Central Zone.

Earlier, Central Zone, which resumed on 223-9, could add only four runs to their overnight score before they were bowled out for 227 runs in their first innings and it gave East Zone a slight 18-run lead.

East Zone batsmen then demonstrated a poor batting effort in their second innings as they were reduced to 51-6 before Nayeem Hasan (68) and Pritom Kumar (54) put up 101 runs for the seventh stand to repair their early collapse.

Left-arm spinner Hasan Murad (4-37) then dismantled East Zone lower-order by taking the remaining four wickets to bowl the opposition out for 180 runs in their second innings and give his side a big advantage in the game.

Meanwhile, in Chattogram, the second round match between BCB South Zone and BCB North Zone is heading towards a dull draw after the former finished the third day’s play at 350-3, replying to North Zone’s 385 runs in the first innings.

Towhid Hridoy struck an unbeaten 159 off 286 balls to complete his maiden first-class ton while Amite Hasan also scored 131 off 373 balls as the pair added 258 runs for the third wicket stand.
