Mashrafe likely to take mentorship role

Former Bangladesh ODI skipper Mashrafe Mortaza might make a comeback in the national team dressing room as a mentor, a top BCB official hinted on Saturday.

“We haven’t discussed such thing (Mashrafe as a mentor) yet. But if he wants to join (as a mentor) certainly we will be happy to see him. But till now there is no such discussion,” BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon told reporters at the BKSP during the prize-giving ceremony of the Bangabandhu BKSP Cup Women’s T20 Cricket Tournament 2021.

Mashrafe’s name in the mentoring role first came in the air when former Indian skipper MS Dhoni was introduced by BCCI as their mentor during the just-concluded ICC T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh’s current ODI skipper Tamim Iqbal in a recent TV programme stated that he would like to have Mashrafe as a mentor in the next 50-over World Cup in India in 2023.  Both Mashrafe and Tamim recently met the BCB boss at the president box of the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium during the fifth and final day game of the second Test between Bangladesh and Pakistan.

It was later learnt that none of the board officials was allowed during the meeting of the trio.
