Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has identified a gang of burglars who steal cash and valuables from empty flats.

The elite force arrested four members of the gang from the capital’s Mohammadpur area on Friday night, said Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director (Legal and Media Wing) of the RAB headquarters at a press briefing on Saturday.

The arrestees are Nasir Sheikh, 25, a sanitary technician, Mohammad Forhad, 29, a fruit seller, Mohammad Selim, 26, a vegetable seller and Mohammad Azad, 38, owner of a jewellery shop at Basila in Mohammadpur.

They were involved in the theft committed at a flat at Dhanmondi on December 7. The owner of the flat witnessed the burglary scenes through his smart phone from abroad, said the officer.

The criminals stole 20 bhories of gold ornaments, some cash and other valuable things from the flat.

The officer said they were the members of a racket stealing valuables from empty flats particularly in Dhanmondi and Mohammadpur areas.

He said the criminals committed a big number of thefts in the area. They entered the houses by cutting grills.

Nasir, Forhad and Selim in association with their cohorts gathered information about empty flats or houses in guise of their respective professions, said the officer.

After committing thefts, they sold gold ornaments to the jewellery shop of Azad, he added.

Next legal action against them was underway, said the RAB officer.
