Popular News

The country’s top athlete Jahir Raihan was sent to jail over a rape case filed by a fellow female athlete.

Jahir, who was on interim bail from the high court over a case that was filed against him on May 21, 2019, was denied bail by Gazipur Women and Child Abuse Suppression Tribunal that ordered to send him to jail.

The sources claimed that Jahir, who recently represented Bangladesh in the Tokyo Olympics, appeared to the tribunal and surrendered himself on Wednesday. He is now under trial.

The accuser mentioned in her case documents that she met Jahir during a training camp in BKSP in 2017 and they were in love for the next one and a half years.

The accused also promised to marry her. Later, the accused raped her forcefully on May 3, 2019 while also refusing to marry her.

The Bangladesh Athletics Federation General Secretary Adv Abdur Rakib Montu told The Daily Sun that they had an emergency meeting at the BAF office on Wednesday evening but they are yet to decide in this regard.

Jahir came into the limelight after reaching the semifinal of the World U-18 Championships in Nairobi in 2017. Later in 2019, he broke a 32-year-long national record in the 400m race during the National Athletic Championships at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.

In the Bangabandhu Bangladesh Games this year, he clinched a total of four gold medals – two in individual disciplines and the other two in the team event.
