Jannatul Islam Rahad, a reporter of the Daily Sun, received an international award from Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) for the second time.

MHTC, the state-run organisation of Malaysia, announced the awards at a grand finale held virtually on Thursday. Participants and officials shared their views through video conferencing.

Malaysia’s Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin was the chief guest while MHTC chief executive Daud Mohd Arif presided over the session.

Rahad wrote a report titled ‘Tech-Based Medical Services’ which was considered as the best editorial in the international category.

MHTC held the programme for the third consecutive year. It received 420 submissions for Medical Tourism Media Award (MTMA).

The organisation received the submissions from 15 countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Italy, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United States and Malaysia.

Regarding the awards, MHTC CEO Daud Mohd Arif said media played an important role during the pandemic and it is still playing an integral role in our post-pandemic recovery of the healthcare travel industry, putting us back on track through excellent journalism and storytelling.

Rahad, having post graduation in business administration, attended professional courses at   Yunnan University in China and Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute of India.

He is a Prime Minister Shapla Cub Award holder of Bangladesh Scouts. He attended SAARC jamboree and technology conference in Malaysia.

The international jury considered the article on the issue of airlifting and telemedicine amid corona pandemic. The jury consisted of Super newsroom CEO Manminder Dhillon, Dr. Izzal Asnira Zolkepli of Universiti Sains Malaysia, Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union Head of Television Hanizah Hamzah,  Universiti Teknologi MARA Prof Kiranjit Kaur, The Straits Times Malaysia Bureau Chief Shannon Teoh, DestinAsian Editor-In-Chief Cristian Rahadiansyah and  Telum Media regional head Haikel Fahim, Southeast Asia.

As part of its award programme, MHTC recognised journalists, editors, producers, and media organizations for contributions in respective fields locally and internationally.

The winners were also judged on the research quality of reports, chosen approach in presentation and technique, creativity, the headline, as well as the content of the reports.

The winners are: Stefan Pertz (Malaysia), Gabriele Bettinazzi (Glogbal Health Italy), Chester Chin (The Star Malaysia), Matthew Brady (Omnia Health UAE), Berita RTM (Malaysia),  Nomad Capitalist (Hongkong), Ainul Rhyshikin binti Yusoff (Malaysia), Katerina Susrianti (Indonesia), Revathi Murugappan ( Malaysia), Gabriele Bettinazzi (Global Health Italy), Bernama (Malaysia) and (Jannatul Islam Rahad of Daily Sun Bangladesh).

In 2019, MHTC hosted nearly 1.3 million medical tourists, earning over 1.7 billion Malaysian Ringgit. The amount contributed to the economy of the country greatly.
