Uncapped left-handed batsman Fazle Mahmud Rabbi has been named as a replacement of all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan for their upcoming two-match Test tour of New Zealand.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board earlier granted Shakib a leave from the New Zealand tour after the premier all-rounder officially informed them about his unavailability during the series citing family reasons.
“He is among runs so we decided to include him in the New Zealand series squad. We hope that if he gets a chance, he proves his worth at the international level,” BCB Chief Selector Minhajul Abedin told The Daily Sun on Wednesday.
Rabbi previously represented the Tigers in two ODIs but on both occasions, he was dismissed on duck against Zimbabwe in 2018.
Bangladesh team left for New Zealand at 01:00am on early Thursday through an Emirates flight for the series which will be part of the 2021-2023 cycle of the ICC World Test Championship. Bangladesh will also have the opportunity to play two two-day practice games ahead of the Test series.
The opening Test is scheduled at Bay Oval in Tauranga on January 1-5 while the second Test will take place on January 9-13 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
Meanwhile, the BCB announced a fresh two-year contract with former Sri Lanka spin legend Rangana Herath as their national team’s spin bowling coach. The 43-year old had earlier been the team’s spin consultant for the away series against Zimbabwe this year followed by the home series against Australia and New Zealand and the ICC Twenty20 World Cup.
