Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will take legal action against former state minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Murad Hassan for his derogatory remarks on family members of Ziaur Rahman.

The party’s standing committee took the decision during its meeting held virtually on Monday night.

BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman presided over the meeting connecting from London, said a resolution of the meeting sent to the media on Tuesday.

“In the meeting, decision has been taken to take legal action against him (Murad Hassan),” the meeting resolution added.

“The meeting thinks that such misogynistic, racist, anti-social and anti-constitutional speech made by a responsible state post, has demeaned the entire woman society and humanity. Dr Murad will have to be removed from Jatiya Sangsad and cabinet and apologise to the people openly,” the meeting said.

The BNP standing committee meeting strongly condemned and protested against the serious indecent, disgusting and disrespecting and out of all political and social etiquette remarks about BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman and family members of Zia family particularly a female one.

The meeting also took elaborate programmes to celebrate the Martyred Intellectuals Day on December 14, Victory Day on December 16.

The party will pay tribute to martyred intellectuals at Mirpur Martyred Intellectual Graveyard at 9;00am on December 14. A discussion will also be arranged to mark the day.

On December 16, the BNP leaders will pay tribute to liberation war martyrs at Savar National Mausoleum at 9;00am. Later, they will also place wreathe and offer prayers at the grave of the party founder Ziaur Rahman in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area around 10:30am.

Meanwhile, BNP senior joint secretary general  Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, in a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the capital, on Tuesday said, “Not only resignation, he (Murad) should be arrested. He should be brought to book.”

“We think, such a person is not fit for politics. He made derogatory comments. Not only from the Cabinet, this kind of person should be removed from the party posts too,” he said.

Earlier, addressing a programme on Monday, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to make clear her stance on offensive comments made by her former cabinet member Dr Murad Hassan against the Zia family.

It is unfortunate that Dr Murad did the politics of Chhatra Dal once, said the BNP senor leader adding “Later he became the leader of Chhatra League and its president (of Mymensingh Medical College unit). It’s unfortunate that such a boy was there in Chhatra Dal at that time.”
