The government has suspended Golapganj Municipal Mayor Aminul Islam Rabel on charges of making derogatory remarks against the Local Government Division (LGD) and the state.

The LGD issued an official order in this regard on Monday.

It said that the mayor made ‘offensive’ remarks while addressing a meeting in London on November 24. His comments amount to an offense according to section 32 (b) and (d) and for which a mayor can be removed from the post.

At the programme arranged by Greater Sylhet Development Forum, Mayor Aminul said, “We go to the ministry. We have to hold meetings with secretaries in the secretariat and LGRD Minister. We have to collect fund from them.

“We have to give a big percentage to get the fund from them. If you receive a fund of Tk 100 crore, you have to bribe them at least five percent of it.”

On October 3, 2018, ruling Awami League’s dissident aspirant Aminul Islam won the mayoral by-election in Golapganj Municipality of Sylhet.
