‘Choosing countries politically motivated’

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Sunday said Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s demand for allowing Khaleda Zia to receive treatment in specific three countries is politically motivated.

“BNP leaders want to send Khaleda Zia in London where fugitive convict Tarique Rahman is staying. Even, doctors suggested this city for her (Khaleda) treatment. Apart from London, they have also demanded that Khaleda should be sent to Germany or USA. Their demand is politically motivated and they want to achieve their ill purpose,” he said.

The minister made the statement while talking to reporters about contemporary issues at his secretariat office in the capital.

Hasan, also a joint general secretary of Awami League (AL), said the party (BNP) would get extra advantages throu this process as propaganda against Bangladesh is being spread from these countries.

The AL leader made the remarks as BNP leaders demanded that the government allow their party chief to go either to USA or UK or Germany for advanced treatment.

He said BNP is trying to create a bad political atmosphere in the country after failing to find any issue.

“They do not carry out politics for the people. Their politics is revolving around Khaleda Zia’s health and Tarique Rahman’s punishment. They can't come out of it, that is very unfortunate,” he said.

“Law minister explained it well that there is no legal scope for sending Khaleda Zia abroad. The law minister can say if there is any scope for sending her abroad,” he added.

Earlier, Law Minister Anisul Huq said the government is looking for legal scope for allowing Khaleda Zia to go abroad for medical treatment.

Hasan also said his government has already shown kindness to Khaleda Zia by suspending her sentence and allowing her to get treatment.
