Militant hideout busted in Nilphamari

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested five members of Jama’tulMujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) with explosives and bomb-making materialsfrom a suspected militant hideout under Sonarai union in SadarUpazilaof Nilphamaridistrict on Saturday.

The detainees have been identified as Ahidul Islam alias Ahid, Wahed Ali, Abdullah Al Mamun, Jahidul Islam andNur Amin alias Sabuj. Ahidul Islam is the military chief of Rangpur unit of the banned militant outfit, RAB officials said.

Assistant Director (media wing) of Rangpur RAB-13 Flight Lieutenant Mahmud Basir Ahmed said acting on a tip-off, a RAB team cordoned off a house atPuthihariMajhapara village in SadarUpazilaof Nilphamaridistrict in the early hours of Saturday on suspicion of being a militant hideout. Later, the team barged into the house and detained the five suspected militants.An improvised explosive device bomb, explosive substances, arms and ammunition have been seized from their possession, officials said.

During preliminary interrogation, it was found that the arrested militants were members of the JMB’s military wing. As part of the military branch’s activities, they conducted IED-making and IED-making training exercises and prepared for subversive attacks.

Two to three months ago, militant Ahidul Islam was making Improvised Explosives Device (IED) in his house. While making the bomb, the bomb exploded in the middle of the night and set fire to Ahidul’s house. They look at different web pages on the internet and get training on how to make bombs.

They were making these bombs with the aim of releasing top militants detained inside prisons andcreating a destabilising situation by bombing law enforcers and important and crowded installations.

According to the detainees, they made IEDs and kept them at the house of militant Sharif for several days under the direction of the Amir of Rangpur region. They include about 20-25 people of different classes and professions in Rangpur region.

Legal process is underway in this connection.
