Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet) has suspended nine students, including a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader, over the death of Professor Md Selim Hossain.

The decision was taken at a KUET syndicate meeting on Friday, reviewing the CCTV footage of the teacher’s confinement to his office.

A five-member committee, headed by Professor Mohiuddin Ahmed, was formed to investigate the incident. The committee was asked to submit a report within 10 days.

Professor Md Selim Hossain, a teacher of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, was confined by a group of students on Tuesday. After a few hours, he was found unconscious in the bathroom of his residence and died in hospital.

The suspended students are Kuet-unit BCL general secretary Sadman Nahyan Sejan, Riyaz Khan Niloy of the Computer Science and Engineering department, Civil Engineering students Tahmidul Huq Ishraq and Mahmudul Hasan of the department, Md Sadman Saqib and ASM Ragib Ahsan Munna of Leather Engineering department, Mechanical Engineering department’s Md Kamruzzaman and Faisal Ahmed Rifat, and Naimur Rahman Antu of Materials Science and Engineering.

The Kuet administration on Friday declared the university closed till December 13 and asked resident students to vacate the dorms.

On Thursday, Kuet teachers called for an abstention from academic activities over the death of their fellow teacher. The teacher had been mentally tortured while being confined at his office, they alleged.

An allegation was rife that a group of 40-50 students, led by BCL leader Sejan, intercepted Prof Hossain at his office around 12:30pm on Tuesday.

During the confinement, the students mentally tortured Prof Selim who was appointed the provost of Lalan Shah Hall around nine months ago, over the selection of the dining manager of the hall.   CCTV footage shows several students entering the professor’s room around 12:30pm on Tuesday and leaving the place 40 minutes later. He was found unconscious in the bathroom of his residence a few hours later.

Prof Selim was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The doctors said he suffered a cardiac arrest.

BCL leader Sejan, however, dismissed the allegations of torture.
