The government high schools are considered to be the role model for other schools in ensuring quality secondary education at the upazila and district level. However, academic and administrative activities in most of the government high schools across the country have seriously been hampered for years in absence of headmasters, assistant headmasters and assistant teachers. These schools are running like a ship without a captain.

According to the lead news of this daily, there are only 89 headmasters against 683 government secondary schools in the country, while the rest of the schools are run by assistant headmasters and senior teachers. The report further stated that there are even some divisions, where none of the government high schools have head teachers. It is surprising to learn that no headmaster has been appointed in government high schools since 2005 and that there are not enough assistant headmasters who can be promoted, or sufficient number assistant teachers to conduct regular classes.

Standardising of education has become a cliché in recent years as our education quality has fallen down alarmingly and has been failing to a great extent to meet the current need, let alone the future demand. The education ministry sometimes is seen taking some steps i.e. reforming the curriculum. However, resolving the crisis of teachers, the persons who prepare the students by teaching lessons based on the new curriculum, is yet to get due attention. Under such a situation, how quality education can be ensured in those schools is a question. At the same time, if it is the scenario of government educational institutions, the condition of non-govt schools is easily understandable.

The teacher crisis is not only hampering secondary education but other levels of education also. Therefore, the necessary number of headmasters, as well as other teachers, must be appointed in the quickest possible time as the former will take over the administrative responsibilities while the latter will standardise the teacher-student ratio that is lower than the average in the country to ensure the quality of education. To develop the future generation by providing standard education, there is no way but to invest in teachers. This will call for increased investment in education. If we fail to do so, changing the curriculum only will hardly bring any result.
