Nat’l Prof Rafiqul Islam laid to rest

National Professor and noted Nazrul researcher Rafiqul Islam has been laid to eternal rest on Wednesday.

He was buried in his father’s grave at Azimpur graveyard following his namaz-e-janaza at Dhaka University Central Mosque after Asr prayers in the afternoon.

Earlier, the body of the linguist was taken to the Bangla Academy and Central Shaheed Minar where floral wreaths were placed on his coffin on behalf of President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Numerous people from different strata of the society including ministers, politicians, teachers and students of different universities, researchers, poets, writers, artistes, social workers and members of various social and cultural organisations, went there to show their last respects to the great academician.

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen, Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman, Dhaka South and North City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Nur Taposh and Atiqul Islam were, among others, paid their last respects to Professor Rafiqul Islam.

His son Barshan Islam sought prayers for his father. He said a prayer and milad mahfil would be held at their Uttara residence on Friday.

National Professor Rafiqul Islam passed away on Tuesday while undergoing treatment in a city hospital at the age of 87.
