Katakhali municipal mayor held

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested mayor of Rajshahi’s Katakhali Municipality Abbas Ali from Hotel Razmoni Isha Kha at Kakrail in the capital on Wednesday morning.

Abbas, who was arrested for making controversial comments on construction of Bangabandhu’s sculptures, was staying in the hotel aiming to flee the country, said Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director (Legal and Media Wing) of the RAB.

On information, a team of RAB cordoned off the hotel at around 11:00pm on Tuesday and arrested him on Wednesday morning, the officer said. Three separate cases were filed against the mayor in Rajshahi for his comments. Following the cases, he fled to the capital. He changed several hotels in the city since November 23, he said.

Since filing of the cases, the law enforcers could not capture him as he did not use any mobile phone or other digital devices. His passport has been seized, the officer said.

During primarily interrogation, he confessed to having the controversial comments. But it could not be known from him what intention was behind the comments and whether he was influenced by anybody, he said.

Abbas was elected Katakhali Municipality mayor with boat symbol in 2015 for the first time and for the second time in 2020.

Earlier on November 22, a 1.51-minute audio clip went viral on social media. In the audio clip, Abbas was heard to say that construction of sculptures of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is a sin according to Islam.  On November 24, a decision was taken to suspend him from the mayoral post. On November 26, he was suspended from Rajshahi district unit of Awami League.
