‘Garbage trucks to have CCTV cameras’

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Tuesday said that they would set up closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) and GPS trackers in all garbage carrying vehicles to stop the practice of proxy driving.

He also said, “We will not let any driver sit idle in home and the proxy man to drive. If we get any evidence of the conduct, we will sack the driver. We will set GPS tracker in all vehicles and we will keep all records of movement,” he said while addressing a discussion at Gulshan-2 Nagar Bhaban on the responsibility of drivers.

In the discussion, the mayor directed the drivers to avoid accidents as two persons were killed run over by DNCC garbage carrying vehicles.

DNCC sources said DNCC has 165 waste-carrying vehicles but there are only 82 drivers for the operations. Due to a shortage of drivers, security guards, mosquito control workers, and cleaners are driving the vehicles.

DNCC Mayor said they would ensure the registration and fitness certificate of all vehicles from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority.

“DNCC would arrange seven-day training for drivers in BRTA. We will send driver batches, with 25 drivers in a batch, to get training in a year,” he also said.

He also directed the drivers not to transport waste in the daytime without any emergency situation. “Every driver must keep a valid license while driving,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, the organizing secretary of DNCC Drivers’ Union Mostajabul Huq urged the mayor to recruit drivers in the vacant posts.

“DNCC started a recruitment process of 68 drivers but it halted in the midway. A fresh recruitment process has to be started again,” he demanded.
