Dhaka University (DU) starts the celebrations of its centenary and the golden jubilee of the country’s independence in a grand manner today.
President Md Abdul Hamid, also chancellor of the university, will inaugurate the programmes at the DU Central Playground at 11:30am as the chief guest.
Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen, University Grants Commission (GGC) Chairman Prof Kazi Shahidullah and DU Alumni Association (DUAA) President AK Azad will speak at the event as special guests. After the inaugural programme, a discussion will be held at 4:00pm with Emeritus Professor Serajul Islam Choudhury in the chair while Prof Dr Sonali Chakravarty Banarjee, vice-chancellor of Calcutta University, will be present as the guest of honour.
The first day's programmes will end at 5:30pm with a cultural function.
As part of the celebrations, important establishments, including Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), Curzon Hall, VC Chattar, Memory Eternal, Arts Building and residential halls, have been illuminated. A festive mood was seen everywhere on the university campus.
On the second day on Thursday, a discussion will be held at 4:00pm with former DU Vice-chancellor and Emeritus Professor Dr AK Azad in the chair.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader and Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar will speak at the programme.
On the third day on Friday, a discussion will be held at 4:00pm with Bangabandhu Chair and honorary Professor at DU Development Studies department Dr Atiur Rahman in the chair.
Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque and State Minister of Public Administration Farhad Hossain will be, among others, present. A cultural event will culminate the programmes.
On December 4, a discussion will be held at 4:00pm with former DU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Shahadat Ali in the chair.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun will address the programme.
On December 12, a victory rally, led by DU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman, will be brought out from Aparajeyo Bangla at 11:00am and it will parade towards the Central Shaheed Minar.
Besides, a discussion will be held at 4:00pm with former DU Pro-VC (Academic) Dr Nasreen Ahmad in the chair.
Among others, Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan and Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury will be present.
The grand celebrations of the DU centenary and the golden jubilee of the country’s independence will end with a concert to be performed by famous artistes at the Central Playground on December 16.
