Nurul Islam Jihadi, the secretary general of hard-line Islamist group Hefazat-e-Islam, passed away in a city hospital on Monday.

The 73-year-old leader fell ill on his way home from an event at the Jatiya Press Club after Maghrib prayers on Saturday and was admitted to Labaid Hospital in Dhanmondi.

He was then moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after he was diagnosed with kidney problems and a heart block. He breathed his last there at around 12.30pm.

Initially, doctors wanted to perform surgery, but were dissuaded because of his age and later decided to continue the treatment in the ICU.

Nurul Islam Jihadi took up the post of secretary general on December 23 last year after the death of Nur Hossain Kasemi.
