Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Monday said Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) has been working tirelessly to establish the rights and dignity of journalists since its inception.
The organisation is also making efforts to lead to professional development, she said.
“The DRU is implementing various programmes and initiatives for the development of objective and constructive journalism, welfare of journalists, enhancement of mutual cooperation and improvement of professionalism,” she said.
Shirin Sharmin said the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina passed Journalist Welfare Trust Act and ensured other benefits for journalists.
“Under her able leadership, Bangladesh is now a digital country and digital facilities have reached remote areas of the country,” the Speaker said, adding that due to the digital benefits, it has been possible to connect virtually.
She called upon the media to play a more effective role in making the ongoing development of the country sustainable. Dr Shirin Sharmin observed that the DRU patronises both male and female journalists equally which is commendable.
“The role of the media in consolidating democracy is undeniable. The whole world is united in the free flow of information technology,” she said.
Former DRU leaders, including Shahjahan Sardar, Shafiqur Rahman Sabu, Saiful Alam, Mahfuzur Rahman, Ilias Hossain and Rafiqul Islam Azad, addressed the function chaired by DRU President Mursalin Nomani and anchored by its General Secretary Moshiur Rahman Khan.
