Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra got off to a winning start in the season curtain-raiser Independence Cup when they beat Uttar Baridhara Club by a 1-0 margin in the opening Group B match at the Bir Sherestha Shaheed Shipahi Mostafa Kamal Stadium on Saturday.

After a barren first half, Sheikh Russel’s local midfielder Mannaf Rabbi scored the decisive goal from Portuguese forward Esmael Ruti Tavares Cruz Da Silva’s cross in the 59th minute.

In the day’s other match, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club crushed newcomers Air Force Football Team by 3-0 goals at the same venue. For Sheikh Jamal, Uzbek forward Otabek Valijonov scored in the 16th minute while Gambian forward Solomon King Kanform scored in the 52nd minute and midfielder Sohanur Rahman netted one in the 54th minute.

Sheikh Jamal will play against Uttar Baridhara and Sheikh Russel will play their next match against Air Force Football Team, both on December 1 at the same venue.

Earlier, Education Minister Dipu Moni inaugurated the meet as the chief guest.

The competition is taking place after three years. The last edition was held in 2018 when Bashundhara Kings clinched the title beating Sheikh Russel KC by 2-1 goals in the final.
