At least 500 shanties were gutted by fire at Majar slum in Tongi of Gazipur city on Saturday, leaving thousands of people homeless.

Being informed, nine units of firefighters from Dhaka and Gazipur rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control. None died in the fire, but some sustained injuries.

Lima Khanam, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence control room, told the Daily Sun that the fire broke out at the slum near Tongi Sena Kalyan building at around 3:55am.

The firefighters brought the blaze under control at 5:55am and completely doused the fire at 1:00pm, she said.

The fire burnt about 500 shanties. After investigation we will know the reason behind the fire, she also said.

Dinmoni Sharma, deputy director of the Dhaka Division Fire Service, said, "During initial investigation, it was learned that the fire originated from a mosquito coil inside a shanty at the slum."

"Almost all the shanties had gas cylinders. Because of the heat, the plastic pipes of the cylinders melted and released gas. As a result, the fire spread soon,” said the officer.

However, the extent of damage caused by the fire could not be ascertained immediately, said Mohammad Manik-Uz-Zaman, assistant director of Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defense.

State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell, Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Panel Mayor Asadur Rahman Kiron, deputy commissioner (DC) of Gazipur district and others visited the spot and assured the homeless people of assistance.

Thousands of slum dwellers are living under the open sky after losing their shanties in the slum.

Russell said that the affected dwellers would be rehabilitated with the help of the GCC and the district administration.

The district administration is making a list of the affected dwellers to provide them with financial assistances, he gave hope.  Kiron assured them of providing meals thrice a day for a week.

The leaders and activists of the Gazipur Awami League were asked to stand by the affected people, he said.
