Sk Russel face Baridhara in Independence Cup opener today

Title aspirants Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Ltd will take on Uttar Baridhara Club in the opening match of the season curtain-raiser Independence Cup today after an inauguration function at the Bir Sherestha Shaheed Sepoy Mostafa Kamal Stadium in the capital at 3:30pm.

In the day's other match, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd will play against the newcomers Air Force Football Team at the same venue at 6:00pm.

A total of 15 teams – 12 participating teams and 3 service teams – split into four groups, are taking part in the competition which is taking place after 3 years.

The last edition of the Independence Cup was held in 2018 when Bashundhara Kings secured the title beating Sheikh Russel KC by 2-1 goals.

However, Sheikh Russel formed a strong 31-member squad including four new foreigners and five national stars with the aim to regain their title.

“Preparations are good ahead of the tournament. All foreigners have already joined the team, but midfielder Thiago is likely to miss the first match as he is a little bit injured. Our target is to start with a win,” national forward Md Jewel said who joined the club from Police Football Club this year on Friday.

Meanwhile, Uttar Baridhara also formed a 33-member team with five foreigners. The club completed their registration on the last day of the transfer window on Thursday.
