CHATTOGRAM: A firefighter died of a heart attack after extinguishing blaze at Chittagong chemical factory in the city’s Sagorika area on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Md Milon Mia, 37, son of late Abdul Latif of Begumganj upazila in Noakhali district.

Fire Service and Civil Defense (FSCD) said the fire fighter suffered a cardiac arrest shortly after the fire was extinguished in the ‘Homeland Chemical Industries’ adjacent to the Zahur Ahmed International Stadium around 10:30am.

He was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where he died at around 2:00pm. FSCD said the fire broke out from electric short-circuit and spread fast inside the factory.

On information, 13 fire fighting units rushed to the spot and brought the flame under control at around 11:30am, said FSCD Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) Newton Das.

The firemen were facing difficulties to douse the fire due to existence of flammable materials at the factory, FSCD DAD added. The extent of damages and cause behind the fire could not be known immediately, he further added.

Assistant Commissioner (AC Pahartali zone) Mukul Chakma of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) said the factory is half a kilometer away from Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium where the first Test match between Bangladesh and Pakistan is going on.
