The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is making all-out efforts to get permission from the government to send party chairperson Khaleda Zia abroad for treatment.

BNP leaders are trying in various ways, including action programmes, to force the government to allow Khaleda Zia to go abroad from better treatment, according to party insiders.

Besides, the BNP high command through different organisations and noted personalities outside the party is trying to convince the government to arrange Khaleda’s treatment abroad, they said. Sources close to Khaleda’s physicians said there is no improvement of her (Khaleda) health condition as she has been suffering from cancer in her body and various other health problems.

“There is no significant improvement in her (Khaleda’s) condition. Her condition remains unchanged,” BNP chief’s personal physician Dr AZM Zahid Hossain told the Daily Sun at 5:10pm on Friday.

As part of its eight-day programmes that began on Thursday, BNP held special prayers across the country on Friday after Jummah prayers, seeking quick recovery of Khaleda Zia.

In Dhaka city, BNP arranged the prayer session on the south premises of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Jummah prayers.

BNP senior leaders, including Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khashru Mahmud Chowdhury, Iqbal Hassan Mahmud Tuku, Abdus Salam, Amanullah Aman, among others, were present.

Khandaker Mosharraf said Khaleda is in a critical condition and his condition is deteriorating day by day. “Treatment of her diseases is not available in the country, so we demand that the government arrange her treatment abroad."

Members of other religious communities also arranged prayer sessions at the places of their worship at different places of the country, seeking early recovery of Khaleda Zia.

Meanwhile, five members of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani’s family visited Khaleda Zia at Evercare Hospital where she has been undergoing treatment at CCU (Coronary Care Unit).

They went to the hospital around 10:30 am and stayed beside Khaleda Zia for about 30 minutes.

After visiting the BNP chief, Bhasani’s younger daughter Mahmuda Khanam Bhasani told reporters that she (Khaleda Zia) has urged people of the country to pray for her quick recovery.

“Khaleda Zia talks very slowly. She is very weak. She has requested everyone to pray for her" she added.

Mahmuda Khanam said, "Considering the worsening health condition of Khaleda Zia, we urge Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to send her (Khaleda) abroad for better treatment."

Bhasani’s grandson Habib Hasan said, "We went to see Khaleda Zia. Doctors told us that her condition is critical. On behalf of Bhashani’s family, we demand that the government allows her to go abroad for treatment."

Other members of the Bhasani’s family who went to meet Khaleda Zia were Bhasani’s elder daughter Rizia Bhasani and granddaughter Suraiya Sultana.

Sharmila Rahman, wife of Khaleda’s youngest son Arafat Rahman Koko, BNP chief’s special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, her personal physician Dr AZM Zahid Hossain and Juba Dal general secretary Sultan Salah Uddin were present at that time.

Khaleda Zia was readmitted to Evercare Hospital on 13 November six days after she had returned home from the hospital.

The BNP chief has been suffering from various diseases, including liver cirrhosis, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, cardiac ailment, kidney disease, ophthalmological problem and other health problems, her physicians said.
