Kings put in Group D of Independence Cup

Bangladesh champions Bashundhara Kings got slotted in Group D alongside Chattogram Abahani Limited, Police Football Club and Navy Football Club in the upcoming Independence Cup.

Bangladesh Premier League runners-up Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club were put in Group B along with Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra, Uttar Baridhara Club and Air Force Football Team.

Group C comprises of Saif Sporting Club, Mohammedan SC Ltd, Muktijoddha Sangsad KC and Army Football team while the three-team Group A comprises Abahani Ltd Dhaka, Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society and Championship League champions Swadhinata Krira Sangha.

The draw was held in a ceremony for the draw, logo unveiling, and contract signing at the Bangladesh Football Federation house on Tuesday. BFF senior vice-president and professional football league committee chairman Abdus Salam Murshedy, MP, general secretary Abu Nayeem Shohag, representatives from sponsors and participating teams were present there. 

The season curtain-raiser competition will kick off on November 27 at the Bir Sherestha Shaheed Sepoy Mostafa Kamal Stadium in the capital. The fixture is yet to be confirmed. A total of 15 teams – 12 participating teams and 3 service teams -- are taking part in the competition.

“The tournament is one of our arrangements for Mujib Barsho. As the tournament is named after our independence day, we invited three service forces who played vital roles during the liberation war. Each team will get participating money; the champions and runners-up teams will also be awarded money,” Murshedy said told the media.

However, Riviera Composite Industries Ltd is the title sponsor of the competition while IFIC Bank is the co-sponsor, Premier Bank is powered by sponsor and T-Sports is the media partner of the tournament.
