Rony puts Dhaka on top in NCL

Opener Rony Talukdar missed out a century but managed to lift Dhaka Division firmly in the driving seat with a sizeable 378-run lead over Khulna Division on the third day in the ongoing National Cricket League final round game on Tuesday.

Khulna closed on 7 for no loss in reply to Dhaka’s second-innings 256 for 8 (declare), facing an uphill task to save the match with final days still to go. Imrul Kayes (1) and Amit Majunmar (2) were not out at the close. Khulna still needed 372 runs to win on the final day.

Resuming the third day on 180-8 at BKSP, Khulna could add 33 runs in their overnight score before being dismissed in the first innings. Shuvagata Hom who bagged six wickets on the second day added one more wicket in his tally as the off-spinner finished with 7 for 48. 

Openers Abdul Mazid and Rony Talukdar then gave Dhaka a perfect start in the second innings putting on 139 runs. Rony scored 87 while his partner Mazid added 61. After Mazid’s exit, Dhaka lost wickets at regular intervals.

Meanwhile, centurions Amite Hasan (186) and skipper Zakir Hasan (122) took Sylhet Division closer to the safety of a draw against Rangpur Division on the third day in Tier-1 game at BKSP.

Amit and Zakir who resumed the third day with 90 and 23 respectively, batted through the day’s almost three sessions in a third-wicket stand worth 243 runs as Sylhet finished the day on 455 for 5 and 62 run lead after Rangpur posted 393 in their first innings.  In Tier-2 fixture, Sahadat Hossain scored an unbeaten 97 as Chattogram Division ended the third day with a satisfying 221 for five in their second innings with an overall 186 run lead against Dhaka Metro who were dismissed for 258 in their first innings.

In the other Tier-2 match in Sylhet between Barishal Division and Rajshahi Division is heading for an inevitable draw after Rajshahi finished the third day on 421 in their first innings replying to Barishal’s 333. At the close Rajshahi have a lead of 88 runs.
