Students of Dhaka University (DU) held a protest programme in front of the DUCSU cafeteria on the campus on Monday, demanding lower price and better quality of hall canteen food at the university.

Addressing the programme, the aggrieved students said they have to spend an extra Tk 10 to Tk 15 per meal now as the food prices increased at the hall canteens.

"The income of the students and their families has not increased. In such situation, it is impossible for us to bear the increased food price," they said.

"The university authorities are well aware of our situation, but not taking any steps to reduce the increased food price," the students also alleged.

They further alleged that hall authorities run canteens on leases under private ownership. So the canteen owners keep food prices high for making more profit.

They also urged the university authorities to pay more subsidies to keep food prices stable, if necessary.

"So, we demand to bring the canteens under the direct supervision of the hall authorities. At the same time, food subsidies need to be increased," they added.
