Unidentified miscreants shot a councillor of Cumilla City Corporation (CCC) and his associate to death at his office on Monday afternoon.

Six others were also left injured in the shooting. They were undergoing treatment at Cumilla Medical College Hospital.

The deceased was Syed Mohammad Sohel, 52, councillor of Ward-17 of CCC and Haripad, 35.

The councillor and some other people were sitting in his business office at Pathuriapara in the afternoon. Three Stars Enterprise was the name of his business office. He also used the office as his councillor’s office, according to police.

A group of miscreants veiled in mask entered the office and fired on them at about 4:00pm.

Hearing gunshots, local people rushed to the office. Meantime, the miscreants fled the scene.

Councillor Sohel had enmity with a criminal group of his neighbouring Ward-16 over establishing dominance in the area. The attackers might have been from Ward-16, some locals suspected.

Hanif, niece of Sohel, said that he was offering Asr prayer during the incident.

Sohel was a son of Shahjahan Mia of Sujanagar in the city. He was the second among six children of his parents. He left behind his wife, a son and two daughters.

Sohel sustained eight bullet injuries on his head, chest and stomach.

After the incident, hundreds of people flocked to the spot and staged demonstration blocking a road.

Arfanul Haque Rifat, general secretary of Cumilla Metropolitan Unit of Awami League (AL), said, “Sohel was a leader of Awami League. He was very popular in his area.”

He demanded capital punishment for the killers.
