LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Tazul Islam on Monday said a decision will be taken within a couple of days over the fate of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Mayor Mohammad Zahangir Alam.

“We can’t say right now what will happen to the GCC mayor. We’ll take the legal step as per the Local Government (City Corporation) Act-2009. We might make a decision in a day or two,” he said.

The minister was talking to reporters after emerging from the weekly Cabinet meeting held at Secretariat in the capital.

Tazul also said his ministry has already started working on the issue.

Awami League has recently expelled Zahangir from the general secretary post of its Gazipur city unit and revoked his primary membership for making derogatory comments on Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyred freedom fighters.

The party’s grass roots have also demanded his removal from the GCC mayoral post.

On June 26, 2018, Zahangir won the mayoral election on Awami League ticket to become the city father.
