The election schedule for more than 1,000 Union Parishads (UPs) in the 5th phase will likely be announced today.
“The issue of the fifth phase of UP polls has been included in the agenda of the 90th Election Commission (EC) meeting scheduled to be held on Monday. The meeting will be chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda,” said a source at the EC.
Earlier on November 15, CEC KM Nurul Huda said UP election will be completed by the next month.
“Election schedules for more 1,000 UPs in the 5th phase will be announced soon,” he said. A total of 17 registered political parties and a large number of independent candidates took part in the second phase where voter turnout was 74.22 percent.
A total of 3,310 contested the chairman post while 28,747 vied for general member post and 1,161 for the reserved seat (women). Elections will be held in around 4,554 UPs across the country in several phases by this year. As a part of the process, the EC announced the schedule of the first phase election in 371 UPs on March 3.
