Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud alleged that BNP is politicising Khaleda Zia’s health issue, as they want her to continue suffering from illness instead of wishing for her to recover from ill health.
“They (BNP) always demand that Begum Zia be sent abroad for treatment. In fact, they are politicising Begum Zia’s health issue which is unexpected,” he told reporters after attending a roundtable discussion organised by the Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO) at a city hotel, marking World Television Day on Sunday.
Many political leaders who are considered isolated from people have spoken there, he said. Hasan said thousands of people are receiving treatment in Bangladesh as there are some world-class hospitals in the country.
“Why should Begum Zia be sent abroad for her knee pain or stomach problems?” he questioned. Now question has arisen as to whether Begum Zia wants to flee, he said.
Hasan said BNP leaders also raised the same demand earlier, but Khaleda got well by receiving treatment from the country’s hospitals.
The Information Minister said the government is working to formulate separate law for mass-media workers and broadcasting industry.
