Students of different schools and colleges continued a street demonstration on Sunday in the capital to realise their demands, including fixing of half-fares of buses.

As part of the protests, students of Begum Badrunnessa Government Girls College took to the street and staged a demonstration in front of their college campus in the capital.

The student protest flared on Saturday on the heels of the harassment of a college student by a bus worker over the payment of half-fare.

The protesters blocked several city streets and Bakshibazar intersection in the capital on Sunday morning.

Traffic was disrupted for more than three hours in the area due to the blockade.

The helper of a bus driver of 'Thikana Paribahan' harassed a female student when she gave him half- fare.

Protesting against the incident, the college students brought out processions from the campus at about 10am, demanding punishment for the transport worker.

The protesters also staged a sit-in on the road, halting the movement of vehicles.

The protesters carrying placards in the hands were chanting a slogan ‘We want justice’.

The agitating students, however, lifted the blockade around 12noon, giving a 24-hour ultimatum to the government to bring the bus driver and his helper to justice and fix half-fares of buses for all students.

They will stage protest again on Monday if their demands are not met, they threatened.

The students of Dhaka College, Shaikh Burhanuddin Post Graduate College, Government Titumir College, Tejgaon College also joined the protest programme.

On Saturday, 10 buses were vandalised by a group of students of Dhaka College and City College, demanding fixing of half-fares of buses.
