Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Mohammad Zahangir Alam may be arrested anytime   for his derogatory remarks on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and martyred freedom fighters.

Zahangir, general secretary of Gazipur city Awami League, was stripped of the party post and also removed from the primary membership of the party on Friday for such outrageous remarks.

His followers are also now in fear of getting arrested. They refrained from visiting him and many went into hiding as locals are ready to file cases against Zahangir, sources said.

The GCC mayor may be shown arrested any time, the sources said adding that Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and law enforcers are likely to conduct drives soon to arrest him.

Instead of protecting his mayoral post, Zahangir is now trying to escape arrest, they said.

Despite repeated attempts over phone, Zahangir could not be contacted for his comments. He refrained from meeting his followers and even stopped going to the GCC office.

A rumour is doing the rounds that GCC mayor Zahangir is going to be arrested soon.

About Zahingir’s possible arrest, Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan South Iltutmish told the Daily Sun that they do not have such information.

Meanwhile, the LGRD Ministry is looking for ways to remove Zahangir from the mayoral post as ruling Awami League wants to strip him of mayoral post for his derogatory remarks on Bangabandhu and martyred freedom fighters.

Contacted, noted lawyer Dr Shahdeen Malik said there is no specific provision in the Local Government Act to remove the mayor who has been expelled from the party which had nominated him for contesting the mayoral elections.

Earlier, Zahangir made derogatory comments on Bangabandhu and martyred freedom fighters at a programme. The video of the programme where he made such remarks went viral.

Following the incident, the Awami League issued a show cause notice on the GCC mayor asking him to submit his explanation within 15 days.

In his reply to the show-cause notice, Zahangir expressed sorry for violating the discipline and begged mercy.

Legal experts said that as there are many loopholes in the Local Government Act, the LGRD Ministry can remove Zahangir from the mayoral post any time by using these loopholes.

On Saturday, LGRD Minister Tajul Islam said whether Zahangir’s mayorship will sustain or not will be decided in accordance with the law.

To this effect, local government laws are also under scrutiny by the ministry while cases are likely to be filed against Zahangir, local sources said.

After the meeting of Awami League Central Working Committee (ALCWC), party general secretary Obaidul Quader said legal action will be taken against the GCC mayor.

“We will officially communicate with the LGRD Ministry over the party’s decision on expulsion of Zahangir from the party,” he said.

Sources said most of the party leaders demanded organizational and legal punishment and removal of Zahangir as mayor at the ALCWC meeting.

In response to their demand for removal of the mayor, AL President Sheikh Hasina also expressed annoyance over Zahangir at the meeting held on Friday.

Over the party decision, Zahangir, however, hinted at appealing to the party President Sheikh Hasina for review of his expulsion from the party.
