Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Md Tazul Islam could not clarify whether Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Zahangir Alam, who was expelled from Awami League, would be able to hold office or not.

“We can make comments on the matter after going through the law,” he said.

The minister briefed reporters on the issue after a meeting at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka in the capital on Saturday.

Awami League on Friday expelled Zahangir from the party post for his controversial remarks about Bangabandhu and the martyred freedom fighters.

Earlier, the law minister redirected the issue to the LGRD minister while receiving queries from reporters about mayoral position of the expelled AL leader.

The LGRD minister said, “I cannot comment on the matter without analysing the law. The issue will be settled according to the law. He is the running mayor of the city corporation. The law will fix the timeline for his office.”

The expulsion of Zahangir from the party is considered as the first such incident since the introduction of party symbol in local government elections five years back. However, the local government rules for city corporations don’t have any directives on such happenings.
