Students of different educational institutions went on the rampage and vandalised 11 buses in the capital on Saturday demanding half bus fare for them.
A group of the students vandalised at least 10 buses on Mirpur Road at Science Laboratory point at 12:00 noon.
Students in the uniforms of Dhaka College, City College and Ideal College were chanting slogan. At one stage, they began vandalising glasses of buses, police said.
Later, the agitating students fled the scene when police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
The vandalism led to a vehicular halt for some time. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
The agitating students brought out a procession demanding half bus fare for them, said Mohammad Saiful Islam, inspector (investigation) of Dhanmondi Police Station, said.
At one stage, some unruly boys began vandalising buses. Glasses of at least 10 buses were damaged, he said. Some students of Science College vandalised a bus of Swadhin Paribahan at Farmgate
They blocked the road for around 40 minutes. Then police brought the situation under control, he said.
A student insulted in the bus of Swadhin Paribahan said the staffers were charging full fare from students.
“I paid Tk 20 against full fare of Tk 30, but the conductor did not receive it. He insulted me verbally and physically,” the student said.
Rahmat Mia, driver of Mirpur Metro Services, said, “As soon as our bus came in front of Labaid Hospital, I saw that some students were vandalising buses. I fled the scene stopping my bus. On my return, I found my bus damaged seriously.”
A staff of Bikash Paribahan said, “Before sensing anything, I found that some students came and started vandalising buses.”
Earlier on Thursday, the students of Dhaka College demonstrated blocking the road in front of the college for the same demand.
