He gets around in expensive cars and arranges liquor and gambling parties regularly in his farmhouse. There is at least Tk 10 crore in 18 bank accounts and he owns six brickfields and two dockyards.
This is the story of Union Parishad member Rasel Miah who amassed huge wealth through corruption in the last 10 years, according to a complaint report lodged with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The allegations highlight Rasel’s rise amassing hundreds of crores of taka through corruption, embezzlement funds and irregularities.
According to the two allegations filed with the ACC, Rasel Mia, a UP member of Kunda Union’s ward no 6 of Keraniganj upazila, belonged to a poor family. But after being elected UP member of the area in 2011, he became the owner of hundreds of crores of taka by forcibly occupying the lands and committing various frauds. Rasel seized land from ordinary people and forcibly removed soil from others’ land to sell to others.
Although there is no source of any legitimate income, referring to Rasel’s wealth acquisition in the last 11 years, the complaint stated that his three brothers including Habibur Rahman Rana and Mostaq Ahmed Raju, have built six brickfield units in their area under Bhai Bhai Bricks.
He also owns two dockyards, Bhai Bhai Dockyard and Rasel Traders. Apart from this, he has registered at least 1000 acres of land in his own name in about 50 documents. Tk 10 crore has been spent for the registration fee of these lands.
He has smuggled huge sums of money abroad and built second homes in Malaysia and Dubai. Alleging that Rasel concealed his wealth and information in income tax returns, the complaint stated that the land registered in Rasel’s name worth about Tk 30 crore as per the prices of the government mouza. Although Rasel owns wealth and properties worth Tk 100 crore, he showed movable and immovable wealth of only Tk 35.45 lakh.
He showed his income at Tk 5.9 lakh on his returns bearing TIN 210962342578 and paid Tk 24,000 as taxes, the NBR said, adding that he declared a net wealth of Tk 35.45 lakh.
On the grabbing of Hindu community’s land, the complaint said that whenever he finds any vacant land of the minority community, he tactfully takes the land under his control.
Besides, whenever any Hindu goes to him for arbitrary of his or her land-related complexities, he discreetly takes the land under his occupation with the help of brokers at the local land office.
Allegations have been raised against Rasel that he made plots on the nunnery of the community at Rothkhola in Brahmangaon and constructed a road moving there.
According to the complaint, he built a farm house on three bighas of land at Brahmangaon where he sets a regular wine and gambling parties.
He is wanted in a case filed over mayhem committed by Hefazat-e-Islam at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel.
When contacted, Rasel said that a vested quarter was spreading propaganda. He claimed the allegations submitted to the ACC were false, fabricated and motivated.
On the allegations filed with the ACC, Mohiuddin, a resident of ward No. 6 under Kunda Union, said that Rasel had only 23 percent share of a brickkiln before being a member of the union parishad and had no any other business. But after becoming a member, he had owned wealth and properties worth Tk 100 crore.
“Now, he has six brick kilns, two dockyards and he has brought more than 1,000 decimals of land. He illegally sold the land of the Hindu,” he said.
Anwar Hossain, another resident of the area, said that Rasel amassed huge wealth through illegal means after becoming a UP member.
On October 24, one Monir Hossain lodged a general diary with Keraniganj South Police Station alleging that Rasel threatened him over the upcoming UP polls.
