3 Sonali Bank officials jailed for 31 years

A Noakhali court on Monday sentenced three officials of Sonali Bank Limited, including a branch manager to 31 years’ imprisonment on charges of embezzling Tk 19.36 crore.

Noakhali Special Judge Court handed down the verdict after examining all documents and evidence of the case, said Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) spokesperson M Arif Sadiq.

 The court also fined them Tk 25.75 lakh each, he added. The convicts are Md Rahim Ullah Khandaker, manager of Sonagazi branch of Sonali Bank, Md Abul Kalam, second officer of the branch; and Md Mizanur Rahman, assistant officer of the same branch.

According to the case, the three officials embezzled over Tk19.36 lakh in collusion with each other’s by duplicating clients’ signatures between October 2, 2011 and August 13, 2012.

Following the incident, ACC Assistant Director Nurul Islam Sarkar filed a case with Sonagazi Police Station against the three bank officials in 2014.
