Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque on Monday said the government will start a vaccination campaign today to inoculate the slum dwellers against Covid-19 across the country, including the capital.

“The vaccination for slum dwellers will begin from Tuesday. We have planned to bring the areas with comparatively higher population density under vaccination coverage. We are also thinking about inoculation of the garment workers,” he said.

The health minister made the announcement while speaking at a freezer van distribution function at Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) auditorium in the capital’s Mohakhali area.

“At first, we will start the vaccination campaign for slum dwellers from Mohakhali’s Korail Bosti (slum) where around 3,00,000 people live. We will start our vaccination programme in other slums in phases,” said Zahid Maleque.

The minister informed that the slum dwellers, who have not completed online registration, can receive vaccine shots on the spot through registering with NID or birth registration.

He said the government has also completed arrangements in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to inoculate the physically disabled people.

The minister also informed the government has purchased 21 crore doses of vaccines while Covax is going to provide two crore vaccine shots for Bangladesh.

“We have already received more than 11 crore doses from different sources. We have administered first dose to more than five crore people and second dose to around 3.13 crore. We have already administered around 8.5 crore vaccine shots,” he added.

Mentioning that now there are 2.75 crore doses of vaccines in stock of the government, Zahid Maleque said the government has set a target of inoculating three crore people by November.

“To this end, we have increased our vaccination capacity as we are administering 15 lakh doses of vaccines every day. At the same time, we have also started inoculating the school children with Pfizer vaccine,” he added.

The minister said that the vaccine production activities are underway in Gopalganj as state-owned Essential Drugs Company Limited (EDCL) is taking preparation to this end.
