A female fraudster was arrested for phoning Tangail Police Super introducing herself as wife of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Benazir Ahmed.

She was influencing the SP over phone to recruit a youth as a constable.

Police arrested the woman named Ruma Akhter, 32, hailing from Rahmatpur village of Chitalmari upazila in Bagerhat along with her husband Mohammad Aslam Mia from Atibazar in Keraniganj on the outskirts of the capital on Thursday night.

Mohammad Kamruz-zaman, assistant inspector general (media and public relations) of police headquarters, revealed the matter to the Daily Sun on Saturday.

The woman phoned the SP of Tangail impersonating her as the wife of IGP on November 7, he said.

She asked the SP to appoint a youth as a constable. She provided him with details of the candidate through a cell phone message,” he said.

Suspecting the matter as a case of fraudulence, the SP informed the police headquarters of the fact, he said.

Later, police arrested the couple from Keraniganj.

A case was filed against the couple.
